Kaeza Fearn: A Week in the Life of a Toy Piano (2016)

In December 2015, I heard a program of toy piano music presented by Smith pianist Judith Gordon and her students in Werner Josten Library. Shortly thereafter, I ordered my very own Schoenhut toy concert grand piano in time for Christmas. Inspired by toy piano diva Margaret Leng Tan, who has commissioned many works for the instrument, I decided to add to the repertoire, and commission a work of my own. I chose Boston composer Kaeza Fearn for her skill, playfulness, and artistry.

My toy piano, named Spunky, went on an extended sleepover play date with Kaeza in Boston, and the result was A Week in the Life of a Toy Piano, completed in Fall 2016.

Kaeza’s dedication: “To Monica Jakuc Leverett, inspiring keyboard artist, and to her vivacious and most singular Spunky, the Toy Piano. With joy and a full heart, I wish you both ongoing spicy colors throughout all of the days of the week!”
