Ronald Perera: Out of Shadow (1987)

Out of Shadow involves the progressive “brightening” of a six-note musical motive. The first appearances of the motive are set in a context of slow, dark, chromatic writing. The motive appears fleetingly in the fast, dissonant middle section. It emerges in triumphal octaves in the bright final section, against a musical background which is increasingly triadic.

Out of Shadow was written for, and is dedicated to Monica Jakuc, who gave its first performance at her London debut recital in the Purcell Room of Queen Elizabeth Hall.
